yo barkeep!

On occasion I go out with with my father to bullshit and have a few cocktails, and our bar of choice usually depends on which of our favorite bartenders are working. Weather it's Mikey's Old fashioned's at Bluegrass Tavern or Brian's Martini's at Harry's we will go out of our way and even adjust our schedule to go and grab a few drinks with our favorite "barkeep". That kind appreciation and customer loyality is what I have always strived for as a bartender. I, like my father appreciate a good bartender and a good drink.
Making a perfectly balanced and well-rounded cocktail is a fine art and so is the challenge of building a strong customer base. You can make the worlds best Manhattan but guess what, if you're an asshole and don't have good people skills then you will never have a following of loyal customers and that is where you will usually get your best tips. Even though I dont watch many sports and couldn't care less about Kentucky basketball, I always make sure I know the players and scores because I veiw it as my job to be able to talk sports and relate to my customers. Aside from making the best Manhattans this side of the Mississippi I must admit that im a pretty damn good bartender. Weather its talking girls, sports or politics I can usually relate to each and every one of my regulars, or atleast pretend to!

fun and games

Just listening to everyone try to figure out plans for a night out is typically an exhausting task. Going out to bars and clubs every weekend is always a good time but sometimes it can be more trouble than it's worth, sometimes the best option is as simple as a deck of cards and bottle of bourbon. The next time you're sitting around on a saturday night with your friends trying to figure out what to do, you might want to concider staying in and blowing the dust off of those neglected board games or worn out playing cards. You and your friends might be suprised to realize just how much fun a "low-key" night can be.
Last weekend me and a small group went to Cheapside to grab a bite to eat and then we decided it would be a good idea to go bar hopping. First a few drinks at Sky Bar, then a few more at Bluegrass Tavern before we finished at the bar Pulse. Although we had a blast, I spent around $225. The next day we collectivly decided to stay at the house and find some much cheaper entertainment in the form of booze, dominos, a few games of Asshole and Apples to Apples. We had just as much fun without spending nearly as much money.
A deck of cards usually costs about $3 and you can get a few fifth's of JimBeam for less than $30 wich is pretty cheap in comparison to what your paying when you go out to a bar. Also as long as you've got the floor space, then no one has to worry about calling a cab or risking a D.U.I. which is another pitfall of a "night out." Pizza Hut and Pappa Johns are always handy and can feed a whole house of drunks for under $40, all you have to do is make one simple phone call. With a little creativity and some people to play with you can even have a blast with a board game missing half of the pieces, just add a little bourbon to your night and see what happens. Im still going to go on the occassional pub crawl and spend way more money than I should but from time to time im going to opt for board games and booze, I suggest you do the same.
